Copeland honored for public service

Calling it the biggest honor he's ever received, Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland will be inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame in Winnfield next year.

"I was really surprised and I am humbled by it," Copeland said this week.

He will be inducted on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2013.

Copeland will be joining two former Concordia legislators who both served as Secretary of State -- Al Ater, inducted in 2009, and James "Jim" Brown, inducted in 2011, as well as former Concordia Sentinel publisher Sam Hanna, who was inducted in 1994.

"I looked at the people who have been inducted and I am astounded to be part of such a group," Copeland said. "But this, like other awards, I owe to all the people I represent in the City of Vidalia and those people I have worked with through the years. If not for them, this opportunity would not have happened. And I am thankful to have the support of my family. It's a whole lot harder if you don't have their support."

Copeland is in his sixth term as mayor of Vidalia and served three terms as an alderman for the city.
