Fifth Walmart check arrives in Ferriday
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Town of Ferriday has received a $180,000 check from Walmart, Mayor Gene Allen said this week.

"It's coming at a good time," he said. "We can pay some of these bills."

He said he was still in the process of tallying how much the town owed and was to meet with CPA Jeri Sue Tosspon on Tuesday.

The Walmart check is the fifth of 10 installments the corporation has agreed to provide the town over a 10-year period to offset sales tax losses when Walmart left Ferriday for Vidalia more than six years ago.

The company has paid the town $1.2 million since the first check arrived in January 2008.

The first check totaled $300,000 and the yearly amount is being reduced by $30,000 annually during the 10-year period. The town is due $450,000 over the next five years.
