Block makes history by Joey Martin - posted Wednesday, September 12th, 2012 @ 3:13 pm  E-mail Story |  Print Story  For the first time ever, Block High made it a clean sweep of Concordia Parish, defeating Ferriday High 21-6 at Melz Field Friday night six days after opening with a 24-6 win over Vidalia in Jonesville. In 2010, Block defeated Vidalia and Ferriday to open the season, but the Bears later had to forfeit their game with Vidalia because of using an ineligible player. In 2008, the Block-Vidalia game was cancelled because of Hurricane Gustav before Block defeated Ferriday, 12-6. "One thing we talked about was controlling Concordia Parish," said Block junior quarterback Trevor Vault. "We stopped the run and our offensive line finished off their blocks." Trevor's father, Benny Vault Jr., was on the other end of a lot of those scores when he played for Block. "When I took this job I told everyone I wanted to control Concordia Parish," Benny said. "When I was coming up, Ferriday and Vidalia controlled Catahoula Parish." Block, 2-0, controlled the clock Friday, holding Ferriday to 33 total yards in the first quarter, while totaling 103. "We have to play with more heart," said first-year Ferriday coach Cleothis Cummings, who played at Ferriday. "This is a different scenario for me. This is not Trojan football. Our tradition is playing with heart, no matter who we are playing." Block went 69 yards on 14 plays on its first drive, eating up almost eight minutes as William Cummings went in from nine yards out. Ken Colber added the conversion kick. William Cummings is a first cousin to Ferriday coach Cleothis Cummings. "That first drive was a great way for us to set the tone," Vault said. Ferriday, 0-2, fumbled the ball away on its first play from scrimmage, but the Trojan defense stopped Block and took the ball at its 13. Ty 'quentin Bell intercepted a Ferriday pass and returned it to the Ferriday 26-yard line on the last play of the first quarter. Vault then passed 16 yards to Dorian Bowman for the score and Colbert added the kick for a 14-0 Bear lead. The final Block score came with 3:23 remaining in the first half as Mario Bowman scored on a 10-yard run and Colbert added the kick. Block controlled the ball most of the second half, holding Ferriday to 52 total yards on the ground for the game and 70 through the air. Ferriday's only score came with three seconds remaining on the clock as freshman Ronald Davis passed 14 yards to Adrian Wiggins. "We got sloppy at times and we only have one returning starter on the offensive line, so our guys sometimes get too content," Vault said. "We need a win and we need to get better," Cummings said. "We've got Vidalia coming up and they are going to get after us." Cummings lost lineman Lee Quinn to a leg injury and running back/linebacker Dontrell Domino to a knee injury. Ferriday hosts Vidalia Friday, while Block visits Jena. Jena defeated Pickering 54-12 in its season-opener two weeks ago before defeating Grant 44-37. Grant is coached by former Ferriday High and Jena High coach Chad Harkins. "Our next four games are against 3A and 4A teams, so we have to pick it up," Vault said. "We cannot afford any kind of letdown or be too content. Jena has two excellent backs and they are playing with a lot of confidence."
