Jennings runs past Ferriday Jennings High ruined Ferriday High's Homecoming last year.
Ferriday would not be able to return the favor, however, as the Bulldogs danced around the Trojans 50-8 Friday in Jennigngs.
"We got off to a fast start and that had a lot to do with our win," said Jennings coach Rusty Phelps. "We benefitted from scoring two defensive touchdowns early and hit some big plays to get out of our own end of the field. When you get a lead, you are able to apply more pressure."
The Bulldogs scored on six of their first offensive seven possessions of the game.
Jennings intercepted three Trojan passes and kept Ferriday without a first down until 64 seconds remained in the opening half.
Ferriday's only score came on a 55-yard fumble return by Trey Hall with Jennings leading 27-0.
"They have an outstanding team," said Ferriday coach Cleothis Cummings. "Coach Phelps was at Newellton when I was in fifth grade and they run the same type of offense that was successful for him then. The kids believe in it and run it extremely well."
Cummings lost two more players to injuries as Keiuwan Miles broke his collarbone, while Karl Hall fractured his ankle.
Cummings, his wife and Trojan players Jarvis Brooks and Lee Quinn also suffered bruises after Cummings' truck hydroplaned on U.S. 61 near the Louisiana-Mississippi border on the way to the LSU-Towson game Saturday.
"We spun for about 30 yards," Cummings said. "It was a pretty tough weekend." |
