Ferriday, 1-5, fell to Jonesboro-Hodge 22-16 Friday in its district opener, while Homer, 4-2, defeated Lake Providence 46-14. "They are well-coached by John Sampson, who coached me when I was at Newellton," said Ferriday coach Cleothis Cummings. "He has that program running well. They have some good players and seem well disciplined." Cummings said Homer uses a variety of different offenses. "Sometimes they will come out in the power I and other times a pro set," he said. "Their strength is running the football. We are going to have to buckle down, lock and load and get after them." Sampson is a native of Newellton and is in his second year as head coach of the Pelicans. "I believe the kids have bought into our system and they understand what we are trying to do," Sampson said. "We've been playing pretty well and hope to continue being successful." Sampson is actually the second head coach Cummings has faced this year from his alma mater. Jennings head coach Rusty Phelps was head coach at Newellton High when Cummings was in fifth grade. Ferriday fell to Jennings50-8 pm September 28. Homer is led by all-State linebacker Demetrius Casey and running back Darian Dunn, who has 825 yards on the season. Jena came into Friday's contest at Vidalia as the most improved team in District 3-3A, while the host Vikings were looking for their first district win since defeating the Giants 40-28 on November 5, 2010. Jena left Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium with a 30-14 win, but it was far from easy.
