Lady Wolves eager to start

Even with the loss of playmaker Ellen Bairnsfather, Monterey Lady Wolves coach Cary Shively has high hopes for his team in 2012-13.

Bairnsfather averaged 12.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3-3 assists a game, which also averaging 6.2 steals a contest.

"We're going to miss Ellen, but I think we can be better," Shively said. "We have a number of girls with playing experience and they have been working real hard. My four seniors have been giving us some great leadership."

Shively's seniors are Kaley Baker, Reagan Tiffee, Kristen Russell and Jessica McNeil.

Baker averaged 7.0 points a game, 3.2 assists and 3.2 steals.

Tiffee averaged eight points a game, four rebounds and two steals a game..

Juniors are Karlee Woodruff and Kelsee Tarver.

Sophomores are Morgan Pecanty, Jodi Duncan, Carli Scott. and Jada Scroggins. Freshmen are Bailey Book, Tiffany Weeks, Sidney Woodruff, Sydnee Smith, Emily Woodrum and Meredith Chatman.

Monterey finished 21-9, posting a 6-2 record in District 4B last year, good enough for second place in the district. The Lady Wolves fell to Negreet 45-35 in the first round of the playoffs last year.

"The young girls are working hard and getting better each day," Shively said. "We're anxious to play somebody."

Monterey's girls face Harrisonburg in the Sicily Island Jamboree on October 25, while Monterey's boys face Harrisonburg at 7:45 p.m.
