School scores increase in 2012; state superintendent visits FHS A day after school performance scores were released statewide, Louisiana State Superintendent of Education John White visited Ferriday High on Tuesday to observe a class.
White met with Concordia School Supt. Dr. Paul Nelson and Ferriday High principal James Davis; Cindy Smith, Director of Elementary Education; and School Board member Cheryl Probst before visiting the classroom of Ferriday High chemistry teacher Rhonda Cavin.
Nelson said the parish's school system showed improvement on its District Performance Score, according to figures released by White and the Louisiana Department of Education.
Nelson said the local school district's score improved from 91.4 to 97.7, and has increased from 86.7 in 2008 to 97.7 today, representing growth of 13 percent during that time frame.
Nelson acknowledged that "the district has more room to grow and will be adjusting a number of instructional strategies over the next several weeks to help improve student achievement."
He praised both Vidalia and Monterey High schools for receiving an A on the state's school lettering system and praised Ferriday High, which although it received a D, showed the largest growth in the district by upping its score by 15 points.
"I have not visited a Concordia Parish school since I have been superintendent and I am very excited to do so," White said. "Ferriday High has made great strides and I wanted to visit and get some ideas from what they are doing."
The state also reported that Vidalia Junior High and Vidalia Upper each received C grades, while Vidalia Lower received a B.
F grades were recorded at Ferriday Junior High, Ferriday Lower, and Ferriday Upper. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
