Monterey, Cathedral split by Joey Martin - posted Wednesday, November 14th, 2012 @ 3:07 pm  E-mail Story |  Print Story  Monterey's Dillon Smith hit four straight 3-pointers in the opening quarter of the Wolves' game at Cathedral Monday, leading the visiting team to a 16-6 lead on its way to a 56-39 win. Smith, who was 4-of-5 from 3-point land in the first quarter and finished with five treys, finished with 15 points. "Dillon has been shooting the ball very well," said Monterey coach Eric Richard. Cathedral outscored Monterey 9-8 in the second quarter as the Wolves held a 24-18 advantage at intermission. "We were a little sluggish in the second quarter," Richard said. "They went to a man-to-man defense and we had trouble adjusting. We talked about it at halftime and came out more aggressive in the second half." Monterey outscored Cathedral 23-13 in the third quarter. Kade Passman had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Wolves. Yankie Duncan added 10 points, while Hayden Cassels added seven points and 10 rebounds. Monterey's girls started out sluggish against Cathedral, but turned up the defensive pressure in the second half before falling 31-26. It was the first loss of the season for the Lady Wolves, who defeated Georgetown 40-24 Friday. Monterey trailed 11-3 after one quarter of play and 16-7 at halftime. Cathedral moved ahead 21-9 after three quarters of play. Sidney Woodruff's two free throws with 4:21 remaining in the game cut Cathedral's lead to 24-17. Two free throws by Jessica McNeil with 2:25 following a steal brought the Lady Wolves to within 24-19. A steal by McNeil led to two more McNeil free throws to cut the lead to 24-21. But Cathedral's Akua Kumi scored two baskets to increase the lead to 28-21 before a 3-pointer by Reagan Tiffee cut the lead to 28-24 with 40 seconds remaining. Another steal led to a rebound basket by McNeil to pull Monterey to within 28-26 with 20 seconds remaining. But Kumi scored two more baskets to put the game away for the Green Wave. Kristen Russell led Monterey with seven points, while Kaley Baker and McNeil added six each.. Against Georgetown, Baker and McNeil netted nine points each. "We played much better defense for the entire game Friday than we did Monday," said Monterey coach Cary Shively. "We have to play with a lot of intensity the entire game." Monterey's boys defeated Georgetown 63-34 Friday as Cassels netted 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Smith added 17 points, while Gary Jackson scored 12. Trey Book had 10 assists. Monterey hosted Sicily Island Tuesday night. Tho results from those games are in the A section. The Wolves and Lady Wolves visit Harrisonburg Friday.
