Two Bears named All-State by Joey Martin - posted Wednesday, December 12th, 2012 @ 3:08 pm  E-mail Story |  Print Story  Block High School, which advanced to the second round of the LHSAA football playoffs, landed two players on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A all-state football team. Offensive lineman Emmett Burton of Block High and defensive lineman Jahmal Macklin achieved first-team all-state honors. Burton, a 6-foot-1, 315-pound senior and three-year starter, was a repeat first-team honoree, and he was even better at center this season, helping the Bears to a district title and playoff victory. "We're very proud of both young men," said Block coach Benny Vault. "They are very deserving." Block, 9-3, lost to Westminster Academy in the second round of the Class A playoffs after defeating Delhi Charter in the first round. Macklin, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound junior and the District 4-1A Defensive MVP, recorded 79 tackles, a team-high 12 sacks, nine tackles for a loss, four pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and one fumble recovery. State champion Ouachita Christian claimed two of the top individual honors on the all-state team. Braden Bristo and Cade Harper led the way for the Eagles. Bristo was selected as the Offensive Most Valuable Player after accounting for 2,115 yards and 27 touchdowns while playing quarterback and receiver. He also was selected to the team as athlete. Harper, a linebacker, was voted the Defensive MVP by a panel of sportswriters from across the state after compiling 137 tackles and three sacks for OCS team that has won the last two 1A state titles and a total of 30 straight games. Harper led an Eagle defense that shut out eight opponents. Block High will open its season at Ouachita Christian next season before hosting the Eagles in 2014 in their season-opener. "They had a lot of seniors, but they have some good players coming back," Vault said. "And their junior varsity and freshman teams were both unbeaten." Ouachita Christian will return quarterback Quin Graves, the son of former LSU quarterback Sol Graves. "I was talking to Coach Vault and he told me he only had five seniors and the size of his linemen and I got to thinking maybe we didn't want to play them right off the bat," said Ouachita Christian head coach Steven Fitzhugh. "We want have a lot of size next year, but we're looking forward to the challenge. It should be a fun game."
