Vidalia, Ferriday fall at tourney by Joey Martin - posted Thursday, December 20th, 2012 @ 10:08 am  E-mail Story |  Print Story  Garrett Rehms of Vidalia High and Jarvis Brooks of Ferriday High are nominees for the Miss-Lou Chapter National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame's banquet on February 23, 2012 in Natchez. The banquet will be the 31st for the local chapter. Rehms and Brooks will be eligible for scholarships ranging $1,000 to $3,000. Rehms played wide receiver for the Vikings, Brooks played running back and was named Parish Player of the Year, Trinity Episcopal nor Adams County Christian School have not named its representative yet. Cathedral's nominee is tackle Dakota Vaughan. Natchez High's nominee is offensive tackle Greg Jackson. Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, who is leading the Rebels into the BBVA Compass Bow on Jan. 5, 2013 in his first season as coach, is the featured speaker for the banquet. The Rebels experienced a dramatic turnaround under Freeze, going 6-6 after a 2-10 campaign last year. Freeze is the sixth Ole Miss head coach to guide the Rebels to a bowl in his first season at the helm. Freeze inherited a team with a 14-game conference losing streak, projected to finish last in the SEC West in the preseason, and led the Rebels to three SEC wins and three near misses. "This is something that I really enjoy doing," Freeze said of the banquet in Natchez. "I simply enjoy talking about life at banquets, churches and various places." Past speakers include Ron Roberts, Houston Nutt, Sylvester Croom, Ed Orgeron, Glenn Davis, David Cutcliffe, Bobby Collins, Jackie Sherrill, Mike Archer, Archie Manning, Curley Hallman, Jerry Stovall, Emory Bellard, Bill Arnsparger, Billy Brewer and Rocky Felker. One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi — make it eight Mississippi wins in the first Miss-Lou Shootout held at Vidalia High Friday and Saturday. Natchez High and Jefferson County High's boys and girls teams made it a clean sweep of Vidalia and Ferriday boys and girls teams. "It was good competition and a good tournament," said Vidalia boys coach Robert Sanders. "We had our chances in both of our games." Vidalia's girls fell to Jefferson County 60-26 Friday before falling to Natchez High 42-30 Saturday night. The Lady Bulldogs stormed out to a 20-3 lead, but Vidalia held Natchez to 12 points over the second and third period and trailed 32-17 after three quarters. Fran Duson led Vidalia with 13 points. Alandra Holt led Vidalia against Jefferson County, netting nine points. "We're getting there," said Lady Viking coach Fred Marsalis. "We have a few more hurdles to clear. We've been coming up short against some good teams. But that's only going to make us better." Vidalia boys kept it close with Natchez High before falling 50-41 Saturday night in the finale. Vidalia trailed 28-25 at halftime. The Vikings were led by Julius Wilson with 13 points. Dearius Griffin paced Natchez with 15. Vidalia's boys fell to Jefferson County. Sanders returned Michael Whitley for the tournament, but Whitley re-injured his knee against Jefferson County and is having it re-checked. "He got clearance to play, but when he went driving into the lane he re-tweaked it," Sanders said. "He is having it looked at again." Sanders was also without Isiah Thompson, who suffered an eye injury in practice earlier this month, but is expected back soon. As if that wasn't enough, Sanders had two players, Deion Brown and Dalvin Brown, out with the flu. Vidalia fell to Jefferson County 54-46. Terrell Virgis and Dee Whitley led the Vikings with 10 points. Ferriday's girls were outscored 20-4 by Jefferson County in the first quarter before falling 66-33. Jada Griggs led the Lady Trojans with 22 points. Ferriday fell to Natchez 61-43. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Trojans 20-6 in the third period and 16-11 in the second quarter. Ferriday outscored Natchez 26-25 in the second half. Jada Griggs led Ferriday with 25 points. Ferriday's boys fell to Jefferson County 56-46 Saturday. Ferriday trailed 22-17 at halftime. Will Scott led Ferriday with 11 points. Against Natchez, Ferriday did not get on the scoreboard until the 4:06 mark in the first quarter, trailing 5-2. But Ferriday led 6-5 with 3:37 remaining. Ferriday led 14-12 after one period, but was outscored 15-8 in the second quarter, trailing 27-22. Quavion Scott led Ferriday with 13 points, while Will Scott added 11. Derrian Johnson led Natchez with 15. For Ferriday coach K.G. Watkins, it's the same ol', same ol.' "Missed free throws," Watkins said. "Except for the Jefferson County game, if we would have shot 75-to-80 percent of our free throws, we would have been winners. I'm satisfied with the effort, but disheartened with our free throw shooting. The kids are now realizing how important that is and they are working hard on it. I think they have been getting up there and rushing it. But we're going to get better at it." The tournament will be held at Natchez High next year.
