Rehms named to Academic Team by Joey Martin - posted Wednesday, December 26th, 2012 @ 1:57 pm  E-mail Story |  Print Story  Whether on the football field or in the classroom, Vidalia High senior Garrett Rehms believed in giving it his all. That effort earned Rehms a spot on the Class 3A All-Academic Football Team. Rehms has a 3.91 grade point average. "It has always been really important for me to do well in school," Rehms said. "How well you do in school determines how successful you can be in college." Rehms wants to be a chemical engineer and plans on attending the University of Louisiana in Lafayette or Louisiana Tech. "Good grades definitely helps out as far as tuition and how much you will owe when you get out of school," Rehms said. Rehms said his love of math is one reason he chose chemical engineering as his field. "I know they make good money and in four or five years I can have my degree," he said. "There are also jobs available not too far away. And it's something I've always been interested in doing." Rehms caught two passes and a two-point conversion from his tight end position and also had five solo tackles and two assists on defense. "Playing football taught me discipline and taught me that if you work hard in the weight room and in practice you can be more prepared for a game," Rehms said. "If you work hard and study hard, you can go farther in life. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it. If you put little or no effort into it, you're not going to live up to your potential." Vidalia coach Gary Paul Parnham has always had a great work ethic. "Garrett has always given everything he's had," Parnham said. "And he's always made academics a priority." Rehms said football is his favorite sport. "I'm going to miss it," he said. "That last game kind of dawned on me that I am almost through with school. I plan on playing baseball, but it was really tough putting up my football equipment." Rehms, who scored a 24 on his ACT, said balancing sports and studies was a matter of managing his time. "It really wasn't bad," he said. "I knew after practice was over I had to get home and get my homework done, no question about it." Block lineman Emmett Burton made the Class A All-Academic team with a 3.58 GPA.
