|Vikings fall in District 3-3A opener|
Vidalia High started the year off on a high note as the Viking boys defeated Sicily Island 7054, while the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Tigers 45-37.
The Vikings have been without Michael Whitley most of the year with a knee injury from football, were without Isiah Thompson for a week with a eye injury, and now have Zalen Parker out after he broke his finger in the Sicily Island Tournament.
"We had some guys step up Friday," said Viking coach Robert Sanders. "We got off to a good start, which is something we haven't been doing. I was pleased with the effort."
Vidalia stormed out to a 21-8 first quarter lead and led 44-22 at halftime.
The Vikings had balanced scoring as Deion Brown led the way with 12 points, while Isiah Thompson and Terrell Virgis added 10 points each.
Ladarius Frazier of Sicily Island led all scorers with 19 points.
The Vikings are currently seeded No. 48 in the Class 3A power rankings.
Sicily Island's boys are ranked No. 3 in the Class C ratings.
Vidalia led 15-8 at halftime.
The Lady Vikings are seeded No. 40 in the Class 3A power rankings.
Shermel Bell led Vidalia with 14 points, while Fran Duson added 11.
Aniyah Brown and Kalia Phillips paced Sicily Island with 11 points each.
"We're just hoping to keep it rolling," said Lady Viking coach Fred Marsalis.
The Lady Vikings improved to 3-10 with their win.
It's been a while since a Vidalia girls team has posted at least three wins and have been as competitive even in losses.
"The girls are starting to get some respect around campus," Marsalis said. "And we're getting more interest from other kids wanting to be part of what we hope is a big turnaround."
Vidalia hosts Buckeye Friday in a district contest.
