Some new resolutions by Joey Martin - posted Wednesday, January 16th, 2013 @ 3:11 pm  E-mail Story |  Print Story  I never was good at New Year's resolutions. Usually I'm looking to next year by now. So I'm going to make some for other people. Football players - high school, college and professional. When you get into the end zone, act like you have been there before. Don't go pretending you are pulling your shirt apart to show this big ol' S. Oh really. You are Superman? Why didn't you just fly down the field? And don't talk trash. You really want to look cool and unique? Hand the ball to the official or just lay it down easily. Better yet, celebrate with your teammates. They were a big reason you got there. And you just got a first down. The guys wearing the stripes are the ones getting paid to give that signal. Go back to the huddle and work on getting another first down. Unless you are not planning on getting another one. And you guys on the defensive side -- if you get a sack or interception -- move on to the next play. In case you have a short memory, that's what you practiced through the hot summer to do. If it's that big a deal to you, let someone else who expects to do it every play take your place. I don't see you doing a dance after having someone ran right through you or around you. On to basketball. Don't scream out when you dunk the ball. You practice all week dunking it. Work some more on those free throws. Don't stare down another player when you get the best of him. That's what you are paid to do. Don't look at an official as if he just ran off with his wallet. Bad officiating happens. Acting as if you were just found guilty of robbing a bank is not going to change the call. Baseball players - don't jog around the bases after a home run as if you lost your way around the diamond. Go into your home run trot, receive congratulations from your teammates and get ready to play defense. Pitchers, don't act as if it's the first time you ever struck anybody out when you blow three pitches past an opponent. Chances are that batter will come back up to the plate at some point. Let your fans hang up their K sign and move on to the next batter. I'm not saying don't show emotion. Emotion is a huge part of sports. But don't make it about yourself. And don't act is if you are the lead actor on the stage. There are ways to celebrate without disrespecting your opponent or embarrassing your own team. And finally, watch what you type on Facebook or tweet. Don't call any player, coach or team out, don't taunt, don't blame another player, don't talk about how great you are. Happy New Year.
