by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vidalia High lost a heartbreaker in Moreauville Friday, falling to Avoyelles 58-56.

The Vikings led by five points with 30 seconds remaining.

"We had errant passes and ill-advised shots," said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders.

The first quarter ended with the Vikings and Mustangs tied at 6-6.

Avoyelles outscored Vidalia 24-16 in the second quarter to take a 30-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

"We had a really bad second quarter, making way too many mental mistakes," Sanders said.

The Vikings cut that lead to 38-37 after three periods, but were outscored 21-18 in the final period.

Deion Brown led Vidalia with 15 points, while Terrell Virgis added 14.

The Vikings, 5-15, are now 2-2 in District 3-3A play.

"We must win out at home and steal a couple on the road," Sanders said.

Vidalia's Lady Vikings fell to Avoyelles 55-23.

Avoyelles jumped out to a 22-6 lead after one period of play.

Taylor Tennessee led the Lady Vikings with six points.

Vidalia plays at Caldwell Friday. The Vikings return home Tuesday against Jena.
