Anders not yet ready for statewide race State Senator Andy Anders of Clayton wanted to put the rumor to rest at the Ferriday Rotary Club Thursday.
"I have no immediate plans on running for Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry," Anders said.
Anders was filling in at a speaking engagement in Winnsboro for Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture Mike Strain, who was speaking in Lafayette at the time, when rumors surfaced.
"Apparently he (Strain) told the people in Lafayette about plans to run for governor, so it was going around Franklin Parish that I am running for Commissioner of Agriculture," Anders said. "I just wanted to get that straight. That's just a rumor."
But Anders admitted after the meeting that the office may be something he would consider down the road.
"I have a lot of support from ag-based people," Anders said. "I don't have the money other people do, but I am about the only one left in the Legislature in farming."
As for his regular duties, Anders said he is meeting with Gov. Bobby Jindal on Friday to discuss the personal income tax and corporate income tax issue.
Jindal is proposing to eliminate the state's personal and corporate income tax while raising the state's sales tax.
"Everyone calls and asks if I am for it or against it," Anders said. "It hasn't even been given to me. Commissioner Strain and I attended a meeting and the 300 people there knew about it before we did."
Anders said he is weighing both sides.
"Not everything can work in every place," he said. "But I will listen to him and come up with an opinion on what's best. The thing about our area as far as increasing sales tax, people in Concordia Parish will likely go over to Wal-Mart in Natchez and other places to shop. I will let them know that."For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
