Rain, road topics at Jury meeting posted Wednesday, February 13th, 2013 @ 3:14 pm  E-mail Story |  Print Story  Five inches of rain fell in some areas of the parish earlier this week causing concern from rain-weary residents. Donna Remides, the parish's grant writer, told the Concordia Parish Police Jury Monday night that she fielded a number of calls Monday from worried citizens, many from the Concordia Park and Doty Road areas. Some areas of the parish flooded recently after more than 10 inches of rain fell in 48 hours on Jan. 9-11. Thirteen inches total fell in about four days. Remides, who is documenting parish flooding with photographs and surveys, said 185 structures, including homes, mobile homes and piers, were flooded during the January rain event. Portions of 55 parish roads were also flooded. She said she filed a report with the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness on Friday as part of the process underway to fund a parishwide drainage study. Jury President Melvin Ferrington said the comprehensive study may cost as much as $3.6 million based on estimates provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. On another matter, Ferrington asked the parish engineer to inspect a portion of Airport Road where "a little section has sunk in about six to eight inches. It looks like the soil gave away." Hayden Kaiser of Jordan, Kaiser & Sessions said the road is "cracking' at the location. Two sections of the road were rebuilt during the past months. Kaiser said those reconstructed portions are under warranty, but that if the eroding section is in an area that was only overlaid it will not be under warranty.
