Garbage service draws complaints posted Wednesday, March 13th, 2013 @ 2:36 pm  E-mail Story |  Print Story  Two Ferriday aldermen were named to a committee Tuesday night to study garbage service and proposed rate hikes before reporting their findings to the full council next month. Aldermen Johnny Brown and Elijah "Stepper" Banks are serving on the committee. The committee was named after several persons at the council's regular meeting Tuesday night complained about a proposal to pay more in rates but receive less in service. The council discussed last month raising garbage rates from $15 to $25 residential and $22 to $32 for businesses after Waste Management suspended its services. The company refused to continue service after requesting to be paid $60,000 monthly for current services and for past dues bills. "My administration has continued to meet the monthly obligations according to the contract, however, with the financial conditions of the town we were not able to meet the payment arrangement requested by Waste Management," Mayor Gene Allen said. The town voted in an emergency meeting last month to seek proposals for pick-up service. Delta Disposal of Monroe and Waste Pro of Mississippi were the only two bids received. Delta Disposal was awarded the bid at $9.45 per month per unit. The bid from Delta Disposal includes weekly collection, disposal and transportation for approximately 1,240 residents and 110 small businesses in the city limits. The trash will be picked up once a week.
