Delta Charter accepting students
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Delta Charter School Administrator Clovis Christman said letters will be mailed out Monday to parents whose children have been accepted into the Delta Charter School in Ferriday.

"Our lottery period has ended and our enrollment has exceeded our expectations, but we are still taking applications for a waiting list for the 2013-14 school year in case positions become open," Christman said.
He said enrollment figures will be announced later.

The charter school will be housed in the complex that formerly housed Huntington School, which shut down three years ago.

Despite that fact, Christman emphasized that the operation of the charter school has no connection whatever to the former operation of Huntington School. He's even relocated the school office to emphasize that point.

"I've had people walk in and look into the office on the left and call out, 'Whoo, anybody here?,'" Christman said. "And I'll call out, 'I'm over here.'"
Delta Charter school received final approval to open in January from Federal Judge Robert James. The Board of Elementary & Secondary Education had previously given its authorization. The school will open for the 2013-14 school year.

"Everybody's excited," Christman said. "There are a lot of people asking a lot of questions about how we are doing and how we are going to do business. There is a lot of interest in the community.

"We have a lot of hope and expectations as far as giving folks in the community another option for education. But we're not in competition with the Concordia Parish School Board. We're in competition with illiteracy."

Christman said as soon as the weather permits, walls will be painted and other work will begin in full at the facility.

Volunteers have already begun work on the school library.
"We do appreciate the volunteers," he said.

Delta Charter School board member Craig Jackson said the school will be contacting parents or parents can contact the school to find out if they child or children want to be involved in extracurricular activities, such as sports or cheerleading.

"We're on a fast-track," Jackson said. "We are planning on extracurricular programs for this school year."
