Officials monitoring river stages

On Feb. 3, 1973, the Mississippi River at Vidalia stood at 41.5 feet. Four months later, it crested one-tenth higher than the 1927 flood crest of 56.6 feet.

On Wednesday, the river is three feet higher than its 1973 Feb. 3 level.

"The water is way higher than it normally is," said Fifth District Levee Board President Reynold Minsky on Tuesday. In Vidalia for levee board business and a meeting with the U.S. Corps of Corps, Minsky said there is no cause for alarm.
