Monterey sweeps tourney

For the first time in several years, Monterey High swept its own tournament, as the Lady Wolves defeated Delhi Charter for the championship, while the Monterey boys defeated Block in the finals.
Monterey's boys defeated Block 71-63 Saturday in the finale.
"The boys played great," said Block coach Eric Richard. "The guys did a great job of defending and rebounding."
The Wolves stormed out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter and led 40-19 at halftime.
Block closed to within 52-43 in the third quarter, but Monterey maintained that lead throughout most of the final period for the win.
Dillon Smith led the Wolves with 26 points, while Yankee Duncan added 14, Kade Passman 12 and Hayden Cassels 11.
Duncan, Passman and Cassels each had double figures in rebounding.
Monterey's girls, which lost to Delhi Charter in the finals last year, led the Lady Gators 16-10 at halftime.
Reagan Tiffee led Monterey with seven points, while Kaley Baker and Jessica McNeil added five points each.
Monterey's boys defeated Cathedral 63-36 in the semifinals.
Monterey led 13-8 after one period and 23-10 at halftime.
Smith led the Wolves with 20 points, while Cassels added 16.
Monterey's boys defeated Harrisonburg in their first game.
The Lady Wolves advanced to the finals with a 38-29 win over Harrisonburg.
Baker led Monterey with 13 points, while Tiffee added nine.
Monterey's girls avenged an earlier loss to Cathedral, defeating the Lady Wave 47-32 in their first game of the tournament.
Monterey led Cathedral 26-18 at halftime.
Reagan Tiffee led the Lady Wolves with 15 points, while Kaley Baker added 10.
Monterey will participate in the Harrisonburg Tournament this weekend.
