Fire destroys houses on New Year's Day posted Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013 @ 1:48 pm Three houses on Sixth Street in Ferriday were destroyed early Tuesday morning by fire that apparently started from fireworks.
Fire Chief Herman Smith said his department arrived on the scene around 3 a.m. New Year's Day. He said one house was destroyed and two other houses on both sides were completely engulfed.
Smith said two of the houses were abandoned. The occupants of the occupied house escaped without injury.
"The people in the corner house awoke to find the house six feet next to them engulfed and getting ready to catch their house on fire," Smith said. "It apparently started by fireworks, with one going into the vacant house."
Smith said Ferriday Fire Department had two trucks at the scene, while Fire District No. 3 had three tucks.
"It was pouring down rain, which made it tougher to fight the fires," Smith said.
