Vidalia, Ferriday compete at Sicily Island

Vidalia High and Ferriday HIgh boys and girls got in a trio of games to end the year at the Sicily Island Tournament.

On Saturday, Vidalia's boys defeated Block 68-42.

The Vikings, playing their most complete game of the season, led 15-9 after one period and 34-19 at halftime.

Deion Brown led the Vikings with 18 points, Julius Wilson added 14 and Terrell Virgis 11.

Ferriday's girls fell to Franklin Parish 49-32.

Ferriday led 14-11 after one period and 25-24 at halftime before being outscored 25-7 in the second half.

Jada Griggs led Ferriday with 11 points, while Sha'Keria Kelly added 10.

Northwood-Lena's boys defeated Ferriday 47-34.

Shannon Morales led the Trojans with 12 points, while Quavieon Ellis added nine.

Ferriday led 23-18 at halftime.

On Friday, Vidalia High's boys went into overtime before falling to Northwood-Lena 61-58.

A desperation shot at the buzzer at halftime behind mid-court that seemed to be hoisted after the buzzer pulled Northwood to within a basket.

After a steal, Julius Wilson hit a basket at the buzzer at the end of the third quarter to give Vidalia a 42-35 advantage.

But the Gators, behind Michael Laysard, who towered above Viking players at 6-foot-7, 270 pounds.

But Laysard hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to send the contest into overtime.

Vidalia had a 4-point lead with 30 seconds remaining.

"We made some bonehead plays at the end," Sanders said.

Wilson led Vidalia with 21 points, while Isiah Thompson added 11.

Laysard led all scorers with 29.

Ferriday's boys defeated Tensas Parish 88-71.

Ellis scored a season-high 31 points for the Trojans.

Vidalia's girls defeated Harrisonburg 37-35, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 15-4 in the final period to pull out the win.

Fran Duson led the Lady Vikings with 12 points.

Tensas Parish's girls defeated Ferriday 64-44.

Griggs led Ferriday with 13 points, while Kelly and Quaneisha Fontenot added 11 each.

On Thursday,

Vidalia's girls fell to Sicily Island 38-33.

Vidalia led 8-5 after one period, but the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Vikings 8-1 in the second period.

Sicily Island led 20-19 after three periods.

Taylor Tennessee paced Vidalia with 11 points, while Shemel Bell added 10.

Aniyah Brown led Sicily Island with 16.

Vidalia made only eight of 34 free throws.

"Unbelieveable," said Vidalia coach Fred Marsalis. "That's something we work on every single practice."

Vidalia High's boys fell 57-55 to Sicily Island.

The Tigers led 16-9 after one period and 30-25 at half-time.

Julius Wilson paced Vidalia with 22 points, while Terrell Virgis added 13.

"That's been the story all year, not getting off to a good start," said Vidalia coach Robert Sanders.

Ferriday's girls fell to Block 50-49.

Ferriday led 12-11 after one period, but trailed 27-21 at half-time.

Jada Griggs led Ferriday with 24 points.

Vidalia hosts Sicily Island Friday, while Ferriday hosts Sterlington on January 8 in their Distirct 2-2A opener.
