Jefferson looking to lead

Richard Jefferson was all over the field during his career at Ferriday High School, playing running back, wingback, quarterback, defensive back and returning kicks.

As a sophomore at Louisiana College this fall, Jefferson will be battling for the starting cornerback position for the Wildcats.

"It's a lot different," said Jefferson, who had two solo tackles, three pass break-ups and three pass deflections last season for the Wildcats. "I didn't have to worry about playing both sides. I was able to focus on one position."

"Richard got some reps as a true freshman on a nationally-ranked playoff team which speaks a lot about his ability," said Louisiana College head coach Dennis Dunn. "We don't have a lot of freshmen contribute because of the development of our program. Richard will be starting as a sophomore and I expect him to be a dominant force in this conference and an All-American down the road."

Jefferson said he learned a lot about footwork and handwork, as well how to play a receiver last year.

"It takes a lot of dedication and hard work," Jefferson said. "You have to get your hands on a big receiver, while you have to use your quickness on a small receiver."

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound Jefferson plans on hitting the weights even harder and bulking up to about 175 pounds.

Jefferson has been clocked at 4.4 in the 40.

"I'm expecting even bigger things next year," Jefferson said. "I dropped a couple of interceptions last year, so I want to get some picks next season."

Louisiana College's 2012 team finished ranked in the D3Football.com Top 25 poll for the first time in school history, coming in at No. 23. 

The 8-3 Wildcats also became the first team in program history to win 8 games as well as being the first team to make the Division 3 football playoffs. 

Jefferson rushed for 1,438 yards and passed for 1,578, accounting for 23 touchdowns. He also had 47 tackles on defense.

Jefferson, who is majoring in Athletic Training, said it was quite an adjustment going from playing at Melz Field to playing on Wildcat Field, which was opened on October 25, 2008.  It is a state-of-the art grassy-turf field.

"I love playing on that field," Jefferson said. "I had to adjust to playing a lot faster."

Jefferson said the team is running at 5 a.m. and lifting weights in anticipation of spring practice.

"I know what to expect now and know there will be competition behind me wanting my spot," he said. "I also feel like I am more of a leader. I've had some freshmen come in and ask me questions and I just tell them to work hard and stay focused and everything will take care of itself. We're looking forward to even bigger things next season."
